Using The Calculator

If you’ve been exploring options for weight loss surgery, you’ve undoubtedly come across the term ‘BMI’. It’s an abbreviation for Body Mass Index, a crucial metric derived from your weight and height. This number isn’t just about figures; it’s a guide to understanding where you stand: underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obese.

Specific surgical procedures have BMI prerequisites, and understanding your BMI can be the key to unlocking which treatment aligns with your body’s needs. Dive into our BMI calculator below. With your height and weight details at the ready, you’re just a few clicks away from discovering your BMI and the weight loss surgery options tailored for you.

What Are The BMI Ranges?

At SUR, we place a strong emphasis on empowering our patients with the tools they need to understand their health better. Our BMI calculator is designed to offer you a clear perspective on your Body Mass Index, enabling you to make informed decisions about your health and surgical journey.
For adults, the following BMI ranges apply:

If your BMI falls below 18.5, you’re within the underweight range

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is within the healthy weight range

If you have a BMI between 25 and 29.9, you’d fall within the overweight range

A BMI of 30 or over puts you within the obese range.

Which Surgery Is Right For Me?

If your BMI stands at 30 or over, you may consider weight loss surgery. Generally, to qualify for bariatric surgery, one should have a Body Mass Index of 35 or above. Yet, if you’re grappling with health conditions tied to obesity and have a slightly lower BMI, you could be in the running.
