Breast Implant Removal  Surgery in Detail

During breast implant removal, previously inserted breast implants are removed. This can be carried out for various reasons, including personal preference, clinical complications or because the implants have reached the end of their life cycle.

  • Can provide relief from complications like capsular contraction
  • Can give relief from back and neck pain caused by large implants
  • Can make you feel more happier with your body
  • Can help to make mammogram results clearer
  • Can reduce the risk the implant rupturing
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Scarring
  • Asymmetry
  • Loose skin
  • Build-up of fluid (seroma)
  • Changes in nipple sensation

The breast implant removal procedure is carried out while you’re under general anaesthetic, and so you’ll be asleep for its duration. Typically, your surgeon will make an incision near the original incision site. If necessary, though, they may make a new incision. They will then remove the implant, and might also remove the surrounding scar tissue. Depending on your goals and circumstances, additional procedures like a breast lift (mastopexy) may be performed to reshape and restore the natural appearance of the breasts. To end the procedure, the incisions will be closed and dressings will be placed on your breasts.

If you have complications or issues with your implants, such as capsular contracture, rupture or leaking, asymmetry or infection, you may need your implants removed. Or it could be that you’re not satisfied with your implants for cosmetic reasons, for example, if they’re too large or sit too high on your chest. You might no longer wish to have implants at all due to lifestyle changes. Deciding to have your breast implants removed is a very personal decision and one that you can discuss in depth with your surgeon at your consultation.

After your breast implant removal surgery, you’re likely to experience some pain, swelling, and discomfort. Pain medication can help to manage this.

You’ll need to take around 2 weeks off work, although this will depend on the kind of job you do and how physical it is. Most people can restart carrying out light activities within a week of surgery, but anything strenuous, as well as heavy lifting, should be avoided for at least 4 weeks so that you can heal well. You should wear your compression bra for as long as your surgeon advises you to, as this will help your breasts to heal and can also improve their shape.

You’ll have follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your healing progress and address any concerns or complications that you might have.

While you’re likely to feel almost back to normal after a few weeks, it can take several months for your body to fully heal and for the final results to become apparent.

Breast Implant Removal  FAQ's

After breast implant removal, proper wound care and scar management are important. The extent of scarring can depend on various factors, including the type of incision used during the implant removal surgery, but we’ll give you information on how to minimise scarring, such as recommending specific creams or ointments. Your scars should fade over time, but how visible they are will vary from person to person.

You won’t be able to drive in the first days following your operation, so you should arrange for a family member or friend to collect you from the hospital so that they can take you home. You’re likely to feel very tired in the early stages of the recovery period, and you could possibly be in some discomfort, too. Because of this, it’s recommended that you plan for someone to spend the initial 24 hours after returning home with you. Everyday tasks will be challenging at the start and so you’ll need their help to get your recovery off to the best possible start.

This will depend on factors such as the elasticity of your skin, the size of your implants, and your desired aesthetic outcome. Your surgeon will assess your individual situation and recommend the best approach for you.

After implant removal, your breasts might not look exactly the same as before your augmentation, especially if you’ve had implants for a long time. Skin elasticity and any stretching that’s occurred due to the implants can have an effect and alter the appearance of your natural breasts.
