Brow Lift Surgery in Detail

The brow is one of the areas that can be most affected by the ageing process. If you find that yours is drooping and causing you to look older than you feel, you might consider having a brow lift.

This cosmetic procedure raises your eyebrows, which in turn raises your eyelids and smooths out your forehead for a more youthful look.

  • Helps to rejuvenate the face for a smoother look
  • Can restore the eyebrows’ natural arch
  • Can help to correct asymmetry
  • Improves the look of the eyes by opening them up
  • Results in a more youthful look overall
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Asymmetry
  • Changes in sensation

The exact details of your brow lift surgery will depend on which type you’re having. There are 2 variations; open and endoscopic. Your surgeon will recommend which type is best for you based on your skin, hairline and desired results.

For both types of brow lift, it’s likely that general anaesthetic will be used, meaning that you’ll be asleep throughout the whole procedure.

If you’re having an open brow lift, your surgeon will begin by making an incision along or just above your hairline. This typically stretches from one ear to the other. Once the incision is made, the skin beneath is separated from the underlying tissue in order to shorten or tighten the muscles in your brow. Once this part is complete, the skin of your brow will then be stretched and redraped over the forehead area.

For an endoscopic brow lift, your surgeon will make a few incisions on your scalp. A special surgical tool called an endoscope is then passed through these incisions, allowing your surgeon to see beneath the skin and operate on the tissue and muscles. Using surgical instruments passed through the incisions, they will lift and anchor your forehead tissues.

Once your surgeon has finished with the restructuring of your brow, they will close the incisions and dress the area to protect your wounds.

There are several reasons why you might decide to have brow lift surgery, including:

  • To improve a sagging brow
  • To open up the eye area
  • To smooth out the forehead
  • To achieve a more youthful appearance

To be considered suitable for brow lift surgery, you should be over the age of 21, and your skin elasticity will be taken into account. You should also be generally fit and healthy with realistic expectations of the results.

Following your brow lift, you should be prepared to take at least 10 days off work to recover. You’ll experience some swelling, bruising and discomfort for the first few weeks. You might have a loose dressing applied to your forehead, which should help to minimise swelling. Elevating your head while resting will also help with swelling.

You’ll need to avoid the gym or any other kind of strenuous activity for at least 4 weeks after the surgery. We’ll advise you on when you can start to wash your hair and face again, as well as timeframes for exercise and daily activities.

Brow Lift FAQ's

All procedures that use incisions will leave scars. However, brow lift scars are typically concealed within your hairline and behind your ears, meaning that they won’t be visible. You can also help them to heal by following your aftercare advice and keeping them out of the sun.

It’s normal to have some tenderness, bruising and swelling after your brow lift. This will typically last for the first week or two, and you might also have a headache. You can take over-the-counter painkillers and keep your head elevated to help manage the pain and swelling.

Although a brow lift makes a change to your muscles and tissue, the results won’t be permanent. The ageing process can still affect your brow, forehead and eyelids and so your results are subject to change. To make the most out of your results and ensure that they last as long as possible, you should follow a healthy lifestyle, avoid smoking and follow a skincare routine that works for you.

For the first few weeks after your brow lift, your eyebrows might feel numb and your forehead ‘tight’. It might feel difficult to move your eyebrows during this time, but you should feel back to normal within a few weeks.
