Gynaecomastia Surgery Surgery in Detail

Known as ‘man boobs’, gynaecomastia is a condition which causes excess tissue in the chest. Men who suffer from this condition might feel self-conscious, and it can also cause physical discomfort like chafing.

Gynaecomastia surgery, or male chest reduction, gets rid of this excess tissue to give the chest a more masculine and contoured appearance.

  • Can help to improve self-confidence
  • Results in a more masculine-looking chest
  • Might help to reduce chafing from certain clothes
  • Tightens excess skin caused by weight loss
  • Change in sensation
  • Asymmetry
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Bleeding
  • Delayed wound healing

Before your chest reduction begins, you’ll be given general anaesthetic to ensure that you’re asleep throughout the duration of the surgery.

To begin with, your surgeon will make an incision around your areola. This allows them to access the excess tissue and remove it with a scalpel. If you have some excess fatty and glandular tissue, liposuction might be used during the procedure to remove this.

Your nipples might be repositioned if a lot of excess tissue has been removed.

If you suffer from excess breast tissue and it’s affecting your confidence, having a chest reduction is an option that could help to improve your quality of life.

Suitable candidates for gynaecomastia surgery include those who are over 18, in generally good health and have realistic expectations of the procedure. You should also be within 10 pounds of your goal weight when you have the surgery.

You should be prepared to take at least 1 week off work after your gynaecomastia surgery. If your job is on the more physically demanding side, you might need to take more time off.

For the first few days, you’ll experience some discomfort and your chest will feel tender. Swelling and bruising is expected at this stage, too.

Avoid any strenuous activity or heavy lifting for at least 3 weeks after your surgery, and only begin driving again once you can wear a seatbelt comfortably.

We’ll provide you with a medical-grade compression garment that you’ll need to wear for several weeks after your procedure. It will help your chest to heal and reduce any swelling.

Gynaecomastia Surgery FAQ's

While targeted chest exercises might be able to tone up the fat on your chest, it cannot address excess glandular tissue.

Scarring from your chest reduction will be minimal, and your surgeon will make sure that it can be concealed in the natural folds of your chest. Wearing your compression garment for the right amount of time will help your scars to heal properly.

During this procedure, your surgeon removes 99% of the excess glandular and fatty tissue that is causing your gynaecomastia. This means that the chance of the tissue returning is very small, and so, for the majority of people, the results are permanent. However, if you gain weight there is the chance that fatty tissue can increase the size of your breasts.

Your surgeon will let you know how long you should wear your compression vest for. You should wear it day and night for as long as you’re advised, as this will help you get the best results as well as controlling any swelling.
