Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

At Sur, we understand that heavy menstrual bleeding, or menorrhagia, is more than just a physical condition; it’s an issue that can profoundly affect your daily life and well-being. We’re committed to providing a thorough understanding, diagnosis, and treatment to manage and alleviate this often-debilitating condition.

Understanding Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Heavy menstrual bleeding can significantly disrupt your life. You might consider your periods abnormally heavy if you:

  • Frequently change sanitary products every 1-2 hours
  • Use multiple sanitary products simultaneously
  • Experience periods that extend beyond a week
  • Pass blood clots larger than a 10p coin
  • Bleed through clothing or bedding
  • Find your daily activities or work impacted
  • Feel exceptionally fatigued or short of breath

It’s important to recognize that while heavy periods can be normal, they might also signal underlying health issues. Factors like life stage, post-pregnancy changes, or menopause can also influence menstrual flow.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Certain medications, including anticoagulants and chemotherapy
  • Stress and depression.

To determine the cause, we may recommend:

  • Blood Tests: For anaemia, thyroid issues, or clotting disorders.
  • Pap Smear: To evaluate cervical cells.
  • Endometrial Biopsy: Sampling tissue from your uterus.
  • Ultrasound: Imaging of your uterus, ovaries, and pelvis.
  • Further testing could include:
  • Colposcopy: Detailed examination of your cervix and vagina.
  • Hysteroscopy: Close inspection of your uterus.
  • Sonohysterography: Fluid-enhanced ultrasound for uterine lining assessment.

Should further tests be necessary, we will guide you through the process, ensuring you understand each step and what to expect. Identifying the cause is crucial in effectively treating heavy menstrual bleeding.

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding FAQ's

While home remedies may offer temporary relief, they are not long-term solutions. Options include ice packs for relief, vitamins to aid iron absorption, and iron supplements to address low iron levels. Always consult with your GP before starting any new supplements.

Menstrual cycles can change over time due to age, lifestyle, stress levels, childbirth, and approaching menopause. You may find your periods become lighter or heavier in response to these changes.

Hormonal birth control methods, like the hormonal coil, pill, patch, and vaginal ring, can sometimes be used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding effectively.
