Hysteroscopy Surgery in Detail

This procedure uses a slender, camera-equipped instrument called a hysteroscope to intricately examine the uterus. This minimally invasive procedure is useful for investigating and addressing a range of concerns, from heavy menstrual bleeding to unexplained pelvic pain, and even fertility issues.

A hysteroscopy at Sur could be a crucial step in:

  • Diagnosing causes of infertility or recurrent miscarriages
  • Effectively treating conditions like polyps, fibroids, and adhesions
  • Removing intrauterine devices or facilitating biopsies
  • Improving chances of conception and alleviating discomfort

Like all medical procedures, hysteroscopy carries some inherent risks, albeit minimal. These can include:

  • Potential damage to the womb or cervix
  • Post-operative bleeding or infection
  • Rare instances of cervical stenosis leading to menstrual or fertility issues

Under either general or local anaesthesia, the hysteroscope is gently introduced through the cervix into the womb. From there, your surgeon will inspect the uterine lining, identifying any abnormalities. If needed, a biopsy may be performed for further analysis.

The procedure should take around 10-30 minutes to complete. Most women are able to return home on the same day, but this depends on the type of anaesthetic you’ve had and your response to it.

Hysteroscopy might be an ideal option if you’re experiencing:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding that affects your quality of life
  • Persistent pelvic pain that needs investigating
  • Challenges in conceiving, where the cause is yet to be determined.
  • Presence of fibroids or polyps that require detailed examination or removal
  • Experiencing recurrent miscarriages, seeking answers and solutions

At Sur, our approach is not just about providing medical procedures; it’s about crafting a journey towards wellness and understanding. We ensure you are fully informed about why a hysteroscopy is recommended. Should your treatment involve an endometrial biopsy, trust us to provide you with clear, timely information about what to expect and when to anticipate your results.

Post-procedure, you’ll likely return home the same day. Mild cramping and spotting are common side effects, and you’ll find these similar to menstrual symptoms. We advise using sanitary pads and avoiding sex for a week post-procedure to prevent infection.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle post-procedure is key. We recommend a balanced diet and gentle exercise as you feel able, along with adequate hydration.
