VASER Liposuction Surgery in Detail

VASER liposuction uses ultrasound wave technology to disrupt the bonds between fat cells, breaking them apart so that fat can more effectively be removed during the treatment. It’s a less invasive procedure than traditional liposuction.

  • Permanently removes fatty tissue
  • Allows for more targeted and precise fat removal
  • Less invasive than traditional liposuction
  • Can tighten the skin in the targeted area as well as removing fat
  • Can be performed under local anaesthetic
  • Can produce less bruising and swelling than traditional liposuction
  • Can help patients feel more confident
  • Can be used on various areas of the body
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Asymmetry
  • Discomfort
  • Numbness and changes in sensation

‘VASER’ stands for ‘vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance’ and is a controlled, precise and minimally invasive procedure. It’s not a weight loss tool – rather, it’s a treatment for fat deposits which sculpts the body. During the procedure, a probe which emits ultrasound waves is used in the target area. The heat generated breaks the fat cells apart before they’re suctioned out via small incisions.

VASER liposuction can be used on body areas such as the chin, neck, abdomen, upper arms, calves, knees, hips, flanks, buttocks and thighs. In men, it can also be used to target enlarged male breasts by removing excess fat in the chest area.

The anaesthetic you’ll be given before your VASER liposuction procedure will depend on the extent of your treatment. If you’re having local anaesthetic, the area which is being treated will be numbed, so that you won’t feel anything. If you’re having general anaesthetic, you will be asleep for the duration of the procedure, which can take up to 3 hours depending on the volume of fat that’s being removed.

First of all, your surgeon will inject a tumescent saline solution into the area or areas that are being treated. This has a numbing effect, helps break down fat cells between the skin and the muscle, and reduces bleeding. They’ll then insert a small probe through an incision. It emits ultrasound waves, breaking down and liquefying the fat cells before they’re gently suctioned out through a small needle.

There are various reasons why you might choose VASER liposuction. If you have localised fat deposits in specific areas which won’t shift with diet and exercise, it can target them. This procedure can also stimulate collagen production which leads to improved skin tightening and reduces the risk of loose or sagging skin after fat removal.

VASER liposuction is a less invasive alternative to traditional liposuction, and it can also be tailored to your specific body shape and aesthetic goals.

The recovery from VASER liposuction is generally quicker and more comfortable when compared to traditional liposuction. It’s important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions, as this will help to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

You should be able to return home the same day, and will need to wear any compression garments on the treated areas as directed. This will help to reduce swelling, aid in healing, and provide support to the newly contoured areas.

You might experience some pain, discomfort, and soreness in the treated areas, which can be managed by pain medication.

Be sure to rest and avoid any strenuous physical activity during the first week, although walking is encouraged to improve your circulation and prevent blood clots. Stay well-hydrated and eat a balanced diet to support the healing process.

By the 2-4 week stage, you’ll be able to gradually resume light activities. At 4-6 weeks, any swelling will continue to subside and you’ll start to see more of the final contour emerging. If your healing process is going well, you may be able to gradually increase the intensity of your exercise.

VASER Liposuction FAQ's

During this procedure, ultrasound energy is used to target fat cells and break them up for easier removal. This selective fat removal method spares other tissues from damage.

If you maintain your weight by following a healthy lifestyle, the results are typically permanent as VASER liposuction destroys fat cells, which do not regenerate.

Scarring is minimal with VASER liposuction, but small scars will be present. The incisions made to insert the cannula during the procedure will leave some scars, although they are very small – typically less than 3mm each – and your surgeon will try to place them in inconspicuous places such as in the natural creases of the body.

Initially after your surgery, the incision sites may look quite prominent and red, but with proper care and healing over the next 12 months, they will fade and become barely noticeable.

This isn’t a weight loss procedure, so it won’t help you if you’re trying to lose a significant amount of weight. This procedure removes stubborn pockets of fat, and so it can eliminate a few pounds if you’re at or near your goal weight.
