Pre-Procedure Guide

It’s important that you treat your body with care in the run up to your surgery. This not only helps to ensure that everything goes to plan, but can also help to make your post-surgery experience a lot more enjoyable. The exact guidance that you’ll need to follow before your surgery will depend on which procedure you’re having, but there are some general steps that you can take.

Preparing For Surgery

Familiarise yourself with the details

You’ll have the opportunity to discuss every detail of your procedure with your surgeon during your consultation. This is the time to ask any questions you might have and take in all the information that your surgeon gives you – including how to prepare for your treatment.

Follow your pre-surgery advice

Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions on what to do and what to avoid before the day of your surgery. These might include information on what to eat, medication adjustments, and exercise. Take care to stick to these instructions as much as possible.

Stop smoking

If you’re a smoker, it’s best that you quit before your procedure. If you’re unable to quit, you should at least avoid smoking for 2 weeks before and after your surgery. Smoking can harm your healing process and increase the risk of complications.

Organise your transport

This is important, particularly if your surgery involves anaesthesia or sedation. You won’t be able to drive home after your procedure, so you should ask someone to bring you to the hospital/clinic and pick you up afterwards.

Fasting

If you’re having surgery that involves anaesthetic, you might need to stop eating for several hours beforehand. We’ll let you know if this is the case, and how long you should refrain from eating.

Get your medication in order

Inform your surgeon about all medications and supplements you're taking, whether prescription or over-the-counter. Your surgeon will advise if you need to discontinue any before the procedure.

Arrange post-procedure care

After surgery, you'll likely need help with daily tasks like cooking and cleaning. It's wise to have someone assist you during recovery.

Take some time off work

You’ll need at least a few days to rest after your procedure, and depending on how physical your job is you may need to extend this to a few weeks.

Avoid blood-thinning medicines

We’ll ask you to avoid certain drugs, such as aspirin, in advance of your procedure to help reduce the risk of bleeding.
